Alonso Signs On for 2027: Aston Martin Keep Their Veteran

Fernando Alonso is not done yet. The Spaniard has agreed a contract extension with Aston Martin that keeps him on the Formula 1 grid for 2027, a landmark 24th season in the championship.

The new deal ends any speculation about the two-time world champion's future and gives Aston Martin continuity in the cockpit at a time when the team is pushing hard to turn its ambitions into results on track.

Alonso first appeared in F1 in 2001 and has since built one of the longest careers the sport has seen. His titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006 remain the peak of a résumé that also includes stints at Ferrari, McLaren and Alpine, plus a two-year break from the sport before his return.

Aston Martin have long made a point of valuing his experience. Alonso's ability to extract performance from a car, and to give engineers detailed feedback, has been central to the team's development work since he joined. Locking him in for another year gives the squad a reference point as it continues to build.

For Alonso, the extension is another statement that his appetite for racing has not faded. Few drivers of any generation have stayed competitive for so long, and fewer still have chosen to keep going deep into their forties.

The move also has ripple effects across the driver market. With one of the most sought-after seats at Aston Martin now settled, rival teams and younger drivers hoping for an opening there will have to look elsewhere for 2027.
