Roma Land Teenage Playmaker Mora in Rare Bargain Deal

In a market where inflated fees are the norm, a price tag above £20m rarely looks like a steal. Roma's capture of Porto playmaker Mora may be the exception.

The 19-year-old has been tracked by Europe's biggest clubs since he starred for Porto's B-team at just 15. Porto fully expected his €70m (£59.5m) release clause to be triggered in the summer of 2025. No club met it, and his situation changed quickly once Francesco Farioli took over as head coach. Mora slipped down the pecking order.

That opened the door for Roma, who tabled €25m (£21.4m), plus a 50% sell-on clause that can be bought out. It is a fraction of the figure that once seemed inevitable, for a player with years of top-level attention behind him.

Money was not the only factor. Mora was drawn by the prospect of working with Gian Piero Gasperini. "He played a big part in my decision to come here because he likes players with my qualities, and I'm a fan of the way he wants his teams to play," the teenager said.

The early returns are encouraging. Mora scored his first Roma goal against Lecce, part of a flying start to the Serie A season for the Giallorossi.

If he continues to develop under Gasperini, Roma will have secured one of Europe's most coveted young talents at a discount, and with a sell-on structure that protects Porto's upside without hurting the Italian club's flexibility.
